Corporate Responsibility

Since our founding in 1973, we have followed two core principles: Investing for the Long Run® and Doing Good While Doing Well®. Our founder Wm. Polk Carey believed—as we do today—that our business by its very nature promotes prosperity and that our responsibility did not end there. He understood that good corporate citizenship was fundamental to good business and to creating long-term value for our investors.

We employ these principles across our operations as part of our environmental, social and governance (ESG) program.

Corporate Citizenship

As good stewards of our community, W. P. Carey and the W. P. Carey Foundation continue to support educational programs as well as hospitals, museums and other community organizations. The W. P. Carey Foundation also matches certain charitable contributions made by our employees and our Board of Directors and has introduced an annual initiative, Carey the Torch, which will recognize a W. P. Carey employee who exemplifies Bill Carey’s motto of Doing Good While Doing Well® by making a positive impact on their community.

Carey Forward

Our Carey Forward program was established in 2013 as a tribute to Bill Carey’s sense of philanthropic duty and passion for building and fostering productive relationships between our company and our communities. Through the program, employees are encouraged to participate in charitable activities, sharing their time, skills and enthusiasm with others.

Our employees help enhance and improve our communities through youth development, education, hunger relief, healthcare, arts and restoration.

Environmental Practices

Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in both our corporate offices and in our portfolio.

In our offices

Our commitment to sustainability is largely demonstrated by how we manage our day-to-day activities in our corporate offices, including our:

  • Use of energy-saving and longer-lasting CFL and LED light bulbs
  • Deployment of aerator adapters to help manage water flow
  • Use of recycled paper where possible and active recycling of materials
  • Recycling of cell phones and donation of used office equipment
  • Use of ENERGY STAR certified desktop and laptop computers, monitors and printers

In our portfolio

We invest for the long run through both our acquisitions and our commitment to sustainability. We remain focused on investing in high-quality real estate that adds value to both our portfolio and the larger environment.

As part of this growing initiative, we have an ongoing tenant outreach program to encourage them to join our sustainability efforts, providing education, ideas and support for property-level sustainability solutions. In addition to our environmental efforts in our own headquarters facility, we are proud to feature several of our sustainable portfolio properties:
